Uncompahgre River Way
Mission
We began as a group of citizens dedicated to building a multi-use trail from Delta to Ouray who believed in the value of recreation and that getting outside, taking time to hike or bike is important. It is why most of us live here. We saw our job as creating access to the river, to create a project that would economically benefit the region and to foster pride and accomplishment among the communities involved.
Explore our Extraordinary History
Chapter One: Build it
1986 to 1998
This 5 mile portion of the River Way between Ridgway and the State Park was long in the making. It crosses 9 different properties and easements, each requiring permission, negotiation and trust in the vision. Many professionals and volunteers dedicated themselves to the construction over a 12 year period.
Chapter two: Nurture it
1998 to Present
Much as a parent witnesses the birth of their child, it is common knowledge that this is the beginning of the work, the giving and growing of a relationship. The builders of this path knew intrinsically that it was more than a path. It represented the connection of people to their natural environment and also needed to be taken care of.
Who has been taking care?
A silent Angel with friends. Not only did this Angel contribute time, he personally invested in equipment, gas and whatever was required. But this silent Angel is passing the torch so to speak or retiring.
Chapter 3: Our needs have changed

Chapter 4:
Lets continue the Dream
Can we grow the current infrastructure of this trail by including adjacent park areas or sections of trail or better yet, complete the original vision of a trail from Ouray to Delta?
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” -Anatole France
